Tailor Job Description
Boyds Philadelphia is an iconic, luxury fashion destination. Family-owned for four generations, Boyds features Women’s and Men’s designer collections and accessories from the world’s finest brands.
The Tailor is responsible for Altering, repairing, or fitting garments.
Responsibilities:
- Fit and study garments on customers to determine required alterations.
- Measure clients to ensure proper product fit.
- Sew garments, using needles and thread or sewing machines.
- Operate sewing equipment.
- Measure parts such as sleeves or pant legs, and mark or pin-fold alteration lines.
- Measure materials to mark reference points, cutting lines, or other indicators.
- Make garment style changes, such as tapering pant legs, narrowing lapels, and adding or removing shoulder pads.
- Let out or take in seams in suits and other garments to improve fit.
- Take up or let down hems to shorten or lengthen garment parts such as sleeves.
- Assemble garment parts and join parts with basting stitches
- Record required alterations and instructions on tags, and attach them to garments.
- Mark products, workpieces, or equipment with identifying information.
- Remove stitches from garments to be altered, using rippers or razor blades.
- Repair or replace defective garment parts such as pockets, zippers, snaps, buttons, and linings.
- Examine tags on garments to determine alterations that are needed.
- Fit, alter, repair, and make made-to-measure clothing, according to customers' and clothing manufacturers' specifications and fit, and applying principles of garment design, construction, and styling.
- Press and smooth garments using hand irons.
- Maintain garment drape and proportions as alterations are performed.
- Trim excess material from workpieces.
- Measure customers, using tape measures, and record measurements.
- Sew buttonholes and attach buttons to finish garments.
Qualifications
- Minimum of 3-5 years of relevant experience in tailoring
- Jackets: ability to take in sides, shorten sleeves, collars and jackets.
- Pants: ability to hem, take in waist, seat, and crotch
- Shirts, Blouses, Vests: ability to shorten hems and shorten sleeves from the top, take in side seams & add darts
- High attention to detail
- Experience with Men’s suiting a plus
Physical Requirements:
- Prolonged periods of sitting
- Ability to perform repetitive movements for a long period of time
